For tennis players of any level, adding these five techniques into your play can help you improve your tennis game.
Hit & Recover
We all have the tendency from time to time to hit a ball and then watch it as it sails over the net. But rather than being a spectator to our own play, hit the ball and recover so that you’re always in the ready position.
Focus on your footwork
When we miss a shot we usually look to our tennis strings or a flaw in our tennis technique to shift the blame the issue might actually be that we were out of position. Focusing on our footwork and being in position and ready to return the ball can often offset deficiencies in our tennis technique. When you play out of position, you’ll be off balance and unable to take a full swing which, in turn, can cause you to lose control of the shot. Always be aware of your feet and position on the court.
Ease up on the speed of your serve
As we all know, the serve is the most important shot to master in order to improve our tennis game, but this doesn’t mean that you should hit the ball to within an inch of its life every time you serve. It’s a common misconception that in order for a serve to be deemed good we have to wail on the ball. In reality, you should aim to hit the ball at a reduced velocity so that you can set up your first shot. Rather than focusing on the speed of your serve, shift your attention so that your top priorities are accuracy and control.
Develop hand-eye coordination
No matter your level of play, it’s always important to get back-to-basics in order to enhance your skills and double down on your strengths. A simple yet effective drill is to practice your hand-eye coordination by either tossing tennis balls in the air and catching them or hitting the ball off of a wall with your tennis racquet. Both drills help improve your reflexes and your reaction times which translates well on the court. Never underestimate just how important these small things can be to improving your overall tennis game.
Practice under pressure
As the intensity of a match builds, we can feel the adrenaline pumping through our veins as we play through every point. One of the best things that you can do to improve your tennis game is to practice under pressure. As the popular saying goes, you play like you practice, so be sure to put in the effort during your training sessions and pretend like you’re playing for the title each time you practice so you’ll be prepared.
